Revelation • Preservation

"We foster an environment of constructive peer review, the philosophy being the more active members out there thinking, observing and collecting evidence, the more likely someone is to produce something substantial and the more we all collectively learn. Another way to look at it: Every family has an eccentric member or two; we're the place where all those folks can collectively hang out and feel at home."

Haunts Database

Ghost of Silver Run

BRIEF: An eerie moonlit apparition on the tracks makes for great lore; but how could so many people have seen it?

SUMMARY: There is a isolated patch in Ritchie County known as the community of Silver Run. There is an accompanying story about a raven-haired apparition with skin as white as snow that haunts the railroad tracks while dressed in a long gown. The ghost appears at the mouth of the Silver Run Tunnel. The ghostly apparition has been seen by many railroad workers over the years, and she commands quite a tale.

Department of Energy

BRIEF: Poof. Vanishing government facilities!

SUMMARY: Just stumbled across this. Not a haunting, but spooky anyway. Why is googling erasing the existence of government energy facilities from its maps? The DOE in Germantown, MD has no property listing, and its road names don't exist on google maps. That's not just taxation without representation, that's taxation without existence.

Bladensburg

BRIEF: Long history, just east of DC

SUMMARY: The town of Bladensburg was begun by a indentured servant who came to the colonies in the middle 1600's. Ninian Beall owned the land known as Garrison's Landing, which became Bladensburg.

Armory Square Hospital

BRIEF: A very large Civil War hospital on the National Mall

SUMMARY: One of the largest Civil War hospitals in the area was located on the National Mall, where Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum stands today.

Furnace Hill

Westminster, Carroll County, Maryland
AKA: Avondale
FKA: Leigh Master's Home and Furnace

BRIEF: Evil demeanor gets you no nowhere but in the history books.

SUMMARY: The area called Furnace Hill in Carroll County is now a housing development, but Leigh Master's home was located on this land long ago. Leigh Master operated a smelting business during the 18th century, which is why the development is called Furnace Hill. The furnace that Leigh Master used for smelting is still there and people say that it is haunted.

Mount Olivet Cemetery

BRIEF: Many soldiers from Antietam are buried here.

SUMMARY: The graves of Francis Scott Key; Barbara Fritchie, about whom the Whittier's Poem was written; Thomas Johnson, the first Maryland Governor; as well as over eight hundred Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the battles at Antietam and Monocacy are located here.

Bellevue Mansion

BRIEF: Some rooms are now off-limits

SUMMARY: The upper levels of this old Du Pont home are off limits because of strange occurrences: Chairs, it is said, will move around by themselves. The sound of laughter, screaming and moaning is also heard in the upper floors. The lights flickering off and on by themselves.

Old Avoca House

BRIEF: Home of several ghosts, a mix of good and evil

SUMMARY: Emily Thomas is reportedly this house's most famous ghost.

Berkeley Plantation

BRIEF: Fame and history have left a drumming legacy

SUMMARY: The Berkeley Plantation dates all the way to 1619. Thirty-eight settlers from Berkeley Castle in England were the founders of the plantation and surrounding lands. Benjamin Harrison built the mansion house in 1726. George Washington and Abraham Lincoln were among its notable guests. General McCellan's Federal Troops took over Berkeley plantation during the Civil War during a retreat from Richmond. John Jamieson purchased the plantation after the war. Jamieson had served as a drummer boy for McCellan. His son Malcolm inherited the estate in 1927. The plantation is still owned by the Jamieson family.

Secrecy, being an instrument of conspiracy, ought never to be the system of a regular government. --Jeremy Bentham, jurist and philosopher (1748-1832)

4 years, 1 month, 2 days, 37 minutes, 38 seconds until the Mayan end of Age.

"When you get old, the only things you remember are the things you dared to do and the things you didn't dare to do. All the daily stuff, the things you had to do, the things someone paid you to do, blur into the nothingness of 'unimportant to your soul', and when you look back on your life you only see the dreams you made happen and the dreams you were afraid to pursue." --P.J. Gaenir's grandfather
