BRIEF: Death always rings thrice SUMMARY: The Tudor Hall House is over two hundred and fifty years old. This house was the home of the Key family, relatives of Francis Scott Key, the man who wrote the Star Spangled Banner.
The Key family owned a large grandfather clock that reportedly only chimed (thrice) when a member of the key family perished. BRIEF: Varied uses over long time endears many ghosts. SUMMARY: The Carroll County Farm Museum has a farmhouse from the 1800's. The museum has a number of trade building that highlight and demonstrate what life was like in the early 19th century. The museum consists of 142 acres.
Carroll County was created in 1837 by an act of state legislature which made Westminster the County Seat. The legislature built a number of government buildings, including an almshouse for the poor which was built between 1852 and 1853. The Almshouse was called the County Home. The Almshouse purpose was to house the poor people of Carroll County. People who were insane or criminals also stayed at the Almshouse. For the insane, the the rooms had barred windows and metal-lined walls. BRIEF: Dismebodied voices SUMMARY: Peter Shields was a real estate developer who planned to help turn Cape May into the new Newport. Things did not work out as planned. The family packed up and left in 1912. His stately home went through several incarnations - one as the Cape May Tuna Club, a transcendental meditation center, a gambling club, and a brothel. The building was purchased by a successful chef in 1989 and became the Peter Shields Inn. BRIEF: He who spent the night amidst the apparitions SUMMARY: There was once a lonely dirt road which runs next to the local cemetery. And next to the cemetery is a massive, twisted old oak tree which hangs low over the road. It has a thick branch, perfect for use as a "Hanging Tree."
There are many legends and stories about the hanging tree and potter's cemetery. People say that on dark nights you could hear the strangled cries of the ghostly souls who were condemned to twisting away. |
