BRIEF: An old hotel with variegated history still haunts to this day. The oven is on in the morning despite having been positively turned off the night before. SUMMARY: In 1985, George Reynolds moved into an old, vacant, two-story house in Elk Mills. The home was in need of extensive structural repair because of years of neglect. Although Reynolds lived in the house by himself, he soon discovered he wasn't alone. Unknowingly, when he took possession of the home, he got more than he bargained for. The dwelling came complete with plenty of closet space, large bedrooms, a good piece of property and ghosts. While restoring the house, he slept on a cot in the living room. His first eerie experience happened in a nearby room where Reynolds said Hannah Simpers, the former owner, had spent some of her last days. Simpers, who never married, was born and raised in the home. The 70-year-old Reynolds believes she was the first of several frightening spirits he encountered. One night he went to bed only to be disturbed by an inexplicable event. Somewhere around two to three o'clock in the morning, I'd hear all these crazy noises out there, like somebody stomping and thumping and walking around," Reynolds said. The noises continued at the same time each night, taxing Reynolds' sanity. His next brush with the supernatural was a preexisting problem. Hannah Simpers had been tormented by it, too. "Every night, almost near the same time, two to three in the morning, somebody would beat on the back door and knock on the back side door next to this little room where Hannah slept. When he answered the door no one was ever there. BRIEF: This ghost perhaps exists just beyond the spotlight. SUMMARY: The hotel is almost one hundred years old. The hotel is now being converted into upscale apartments. [While it's sad to see things change sometimes, it's always much worse to see them go.]
The hotel was built in 1903 by a Confederate soldier named James Lawrence Kernan. At first, the place was called Hotel Kernan, for obvious reason. In the 1930's, the name was changed. |
