It is said that the sounds of cries, whimpers and chains coming from the attic can be heard to this day. BRIEF: A President's Place SUMMARY: Ash Lawn-Highland was the home of James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States. James Monroe called his farm Highland, and it is thought to be haunted. BRIEF: Ghostly evidence and poltergeists. SUMMARY: The ghostly apparition of a woman dressed in lavender has been seen in the house. The woman was buried in what is now an ivy-covered grave in the old family graveyard. The woman was the wife of the original owner.

A Quaker named Daniel Cowgill owned the house during the Civil War. He used the mansion as part of the Underground Railroad. He had made a tunnel from the cellar to the St. Jones River so that he could help slaves escape. The mansion was an important part of the Underground Railway. |
