Do you know if the island is actively watched, and/or is there remote alarm/monitoring equipment there?
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Carroll
Fort Carroll is a 3.4 acre (14,000 m²) artificial island and abandoned fort in the middle of the Patapsco River, just south of Baltimore, Maryland.
The hexagonal structure was designed by then Brevet-Colonel Robert E. Lee and named for Charles Carroll of Carrollton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Construction of the fort began in 1848, under Lee's supervision, by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Fort Carroll was important for the defense of Baltimore — before the fort was created, the only military defensive structure between Baltimore and the Chesapeake Bay was Fort McHenry.
The government abandoned the fort as a military post in 1920, and the island was declared excess property in 1923. However, the War Department took no immediate steps to sell the land. In May 1958, a Baltimore attorney purchased the island for $10,000, but development plans never materialized. The fort now is deserted. Join free for top speed and maximum content. No electric so there is no surveillance equipment, Sign says Guard dog but we could find the guy that feeds him so the dog must have died, if you go enter quickly toll police have a perfect view of the island entrance Balto. City and coast guard patrol the area but will not enter unless they see you. Nothing else to worry about unless you go in the lower chambers they are filled with water.

Try spending the night there like we did . Join free for top speed and maximum content. i would love to do that but my wife would have my ass, if i did Join free for top speed and maximum content. Thaat's funny, I was on a boat trip for school yesterday, and we went around Fort Caroll, and everyone said it was a bird sanctuary, which I belived it was because it had a bunch of trees, but I thought it looked like a Fort, now I just found out it's a Fort, and I as well saw the "Guard Dog" sign. Join free for top speed and maximum content. Trust me, it's no bird sanctuary and there are no security dogs. Like I said, we spent the night there years ago and infact there was an old generator that looked like it was possibly from the 1950's that's not been used. However it was a fort in the late 1800's I believe built by Robert E. Lee, but not 100% sure. Join free for top speed and maximum content. The fort was built in 1847. Robert E Lee was the engineer for the construction of it. Join free for top speed and maximum content. Very cool. This is one place that I shall investigat for sure. Your pictures turned out really well but its like a potato chip....I want to see more!(lol) Join free for top speed and maximum content. Does anyone have any soundings for water depth around the fort? Join free for top speed and maximum content. When I worked on Moran Tugs I believe the water there in the shipping lane to be around 50 feet or so...after the sea lane 30 then decreases toward land. Join free for top speed and maximum content. I came across the island in the Rand McNally Baltimore City/County Map 2002 because I had to go down to Sparrows Point so I Googled it. Join free for top speed and maximum content.

And I could almost hear the water lapping up against the rocks or the engines of patrol boats. A sense of eerie atmosphere as well. But only towards the buildings. I couldn't help but laught at the boat on the rocks or the human shadow in the doorway. Ooooo scarey!!! But I really like all of them. Very nice! Thanks for sharing!!!! There are locked heavy duty iron gates around the base of Armistead. I have hung out there and partied as a teen ager 20-25 years ago. Join free for top speed and maximum content. This may sound really stupid, but why don't they clean it up and let the tourist see a piece of history. The admissions would probably cover the revenue. I bet it would be lovely if they jsut did something with it. After all, it is a historical site. Thanks for sharing! Join free for top speed and maximum content. The American Lighthouse Foundation has been trying to get access for years, the government will not allow it because there are land mines. They used to test land mines at Fort Carroll. I am trying to find where I read about the land mines, but here is a good site to get some history....

My mistake, the Pooles Island Lighthouse is located on the grounds where land mines were tested!! Sorry guys.

They should have a map as to where they placed them. Send in the proper troups to get rid of them so it can re restored. This is such a shame! Sometimes I wonder if certain US officials should pull down on their ears until they hear a pop. Thanks for the posts and pics everyone. I hope something can be done. Join free for top speed and maximum content. I also heard about the tunnels that lead to the island, but i heard when you get so far there's water and you can't go all the way. Now see i heard that the fort is infested with rats now, don't know if it's true or not though. Join free for top speed and maximum content. You can no longer walk back as far as you used to be able to. Two weeks ago my brother and I wanted to go back there just for the heck of it. It didnt take long before we had water damn near over our shoes. I dont know about the rats, but there sure are quite a legion of cats down there. Join free for top speed and maximum content. It is a shame. Well, one can only wish and hope that the government steps up and saves this landmark. Thanks for sharing. Join free for top speed and maximum content. 4 years, 28 days, 14 hours, 38 minutes, 18 seconds until the Mayan end of Age. December 21 2012 (11:11am GMT). The Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, notably used by the Maya civilization among others of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, completes its thirteenth b'ak'tun cycle since the calendar's mythical starting point (equivalent to 3114 BC August 11 in the proleptic Gregorian calendar, according to the "GMT-correlation" JDN = 584283). The Long Count b'ak'tun date of this starting point (13.0.0.0.0) is repeated, for the first time in a span of approximately 5,125 solar years. The significance of this period-ending to the pre-Columbian Maya themselves is unclear, and there is an incomplete inscription (Tortuguero Stela 6) that records this date. It is also to be found carved on the walls of the Temple of Inscriptions in Palenque, where it functions as a base date from which other dates are computed. However, it is conjectured that this may represent in the Maya belief system a transition from the current Creation world into the next. The 2012 Winter Solstice will also occur on this day at 11:11 UTC. --wikipedia . All the daily stuff, the things you had to do, the things someone paid you to do, blur into the nothingness of 'unimportant to your soul', and when you look back on your life you only see the dreams you made happen and the dreams you were afraid to pursue." --P.J.
