Having nothing on the schedule today, I decided to round up the kiddies and head down to Fort Howard for a stroll. The kiddies, 15 and 11, love this place as much as I do and for good reason; it's downright cool!

We've had the pleasure of being here in the past not only for history, but for geocaches as well. There are a two remaining caches in the park, get 'em while you can! One of them will take you on a 'dirty' tour of the grounds, exploring every nook & crannie, awesome!

I never get tired of coming here!

(from Eastghost.com)
"This park's historical significance is its connection with the largest invasion of the United States in history on the morning of September 12, 1814. The British had landed about seven thousand men near the site that later became Fort Howard, as a part of a campaign to capture and burn Baltimore. In coordination with their navy's bombardment of Fort McHenry, the British troops were to march up Patapsco Neck and capture Baltimore from the east. But the British advance was first demoralized when American sharpshooters Daniel Wells and Henry McComas killed their popular commanding general. The advance had been temporarily stalled by the Americans in the Battle of North Point, and finally stopped dead when the British perceived the strength of the American defenses at Patterson Park. Disheartened, they re-boarded their ships near North Point and sailed away- to another defeat, in the Battle of New Orleans."

"Fort Howard was originally known as North Point, but was renamed in 1902 after Colonel John Eager Howard, a Baltimore philanthropist and distinguished soldier of the Maryland Continental Line during the Revolutionary War. In the 1700's, the site served as an important part of the transportation route between the Eastern Shore and the port of Baltimore. Known as the "Bulldog at Baltimore's Gate", Fort Howard was also created to protect the valued Baltimore Port. Many of the fort batteries, previously manned by Coast Artillery Corps, can still be seen, although they a

Great pics! I still have not gotten to go there. :( Have they started tearing the buildings down yet? Terry was our resident expert on Fort Howard but he hasn't been on for a while.

Hey, Legendpilot, Xenya, Aaron and Ex-MPD.

Very nice pictures, LP. Each one brings back a memory of when I was there taking the same pictues.(laughing) I love the shots of the arches along the building. You've captured 'The Fall Atmosfear' quite well.

Aaron broke that cannon wheel so that Xenya wouldn't roll it away one Night. Xenya has a thing for cannons.[just teasin']

LP, you were at the Park. The buildings Xenya was referring to are not located inside the park, but on the ex-V.A. Grounds. Instead of hanging a left into the Park entrance, one would drive straight past the entrance to the ex-V.A. Grounds and get arrested.[grin]

And, Xenya... how nice of you to say I was an expert on Ft. Howard (even if it isn't true).

I guess I should mosey on back down there to see if the olde buildings are still standing or not on the ex-V.A. Grounds.

The wooden building LP took a few shots of at Ft. Howard Park was alledgedly used to train 'military advisors' who were going to Viet Nam in the early war years of that conflict.

A Full Moon in a few Nights. That'll be swell for some investigating.

LP...did anyone ever congratulate you on your 'Award' for being the Best Cacher(?) of 2007? I hope so.

Ex-MPD... Ft. Howard is located off of North Point Road, down past Edgemere. It is all the way at the end of the road. The Park (legal place to be) is the left turn at the end; the ex-V.A. Grounds (illegal place to be) is straight on through the gates. The entrances of both places adjoin one another, but the receptions would be quite different.[grin]

Have A Chilly Night, All.

Oh... 'Ghost Hunters' are on all day Thanksgiving. All day.

Happy Haunting!

Thanks for the kind words.

While at the park, I was able to get a glimpse of the ex-V.A. Grounds and saw some of the same structures that Terry had posted pictures of. (which I enjoyed viewing, btw!) They all seemed to be intact, although I did see numerous 'utility vehicles' scattered throughout the area. The gate that Terry mentioned prior to the park entrance was unmanned and I had, for a brief second, thought about going in, but my better judgement prevailed. Plus I had my kids with me, they wouldn't have stood up to the pressures of incarceration! :)

Hey LP, Art and Others...

Geez, LP... those shots of the 'arena-type area' are great! You got some good angles on them. Those circular holes in the middle was where the 'big guns' were mounted, and were able to be turned horizontally as the situation warranted. Fortunately, the situation never warranted it during a war.

And wise decision to not put juveniles in a situation where the ex-V.A.Grounds Security would give them the '3rd degree'.[laughing] Yeah... those guards can get quite brutal while trying to get information out of people. I was caught twice, and after just 30 seconds of 'interrogation', I gave out the names, numbers and favorite colors of all the people I could think of.[really laughing]

It was probably a good thing to not get yourself arrested, too. But, that is a personal decision.[grin]

That 'stone stairway' from the first batch of picture you posted here ... I know that place so well. At the top used to be a picnic table. I considered it my 'private place'. Now, alas, the table is gone. I love those steps. They look good even in person.

So, LP, here is what you and me and Art are going to do ...ahem ... we'll meet at Ft. Howard Park (the legal place), and move one of the numerous picnic tables up those steps, and put things back in order. I bet that sounds just as good to you both as it does to me! Thanks, fellas!

If Xenya and John help with the table, we'll also roll the cannon up there, too. Deal?

Art, I agree that the 'bus shot' is great. It does look strange to have the bus parked there, but it makes for an interesting shot. And by the whey and curds, in that shot I think I see the very table you guys ...er, we all will be moving. Wow! Are we lucky or what!? You bet.

Thanks again for the pictures, LP. I'm sorry that no one else congratulated you on your Award. While not be a 'cacher' myself, I can and do appreciate that fine and interesting hobby. And even more so, I appreciate that you are 'The Maryland State Champion'. So, you be proud (as if you

Hey LP, I'm sorry, Congrats on your award! I'd love to try geocaching but I lack a GPS unit. :(

Yeah, I really want to get up to Fort Howard. If these first shots I've had start working, next week would be good! I have two more series of shots to go through if they're going to work. :(

Julie and All,

Howdy!

I heard about your medical procedure, and I hope you are already getting very beneficial results. I guess the procedure is a rather cumulative thing, and some patience is necessary. So... BE PATIENT!

Quite seriously, I hope it all works-out well for you. I mean, you just have to get down to Ft. Howard V.A.Grounds before those bad, bad people tear it down. Why... I can hear 'The Morgue' calling my name at this very moment. Wait a minute!? help!

Those Olde Houses and Other Buildings make for some mighty fine 'photography subjects'. Well, you've seen some of the pictures. LP took some fine shots, didn't he.

Awww... wasn't that nice of you to congratulate LP for his 'Award'. I believe you just made LP's Holiday all the more special for him.

GeoCaching(?) does seem like an interesting and challenging endeavor. One certainly would get their exercise and fresh air. Instead, look at us. Staying in dark, haunted buildings and breathing mold. Yeah... being 'ghost-hunters' ain't all fun and screaming.

Anyway, I hope You & John get on down to Ft. Howard --===soon! If I don't set a dead(?)line for staying in 'The Morgue' and 'The Olde Theatre' at Ft. Howard, I'm going to miss it. So, I've got to make plans, and get in gear.

Take Care, Julie & John.
Take Care, LP. (i'll try not to be mad because you have better picture of Ft. Howard Park ).
Take Care, Art. (limbering-up to move that picnic table?)
Take Care, All.

As Usual,
Terry

Take Care, Julie. Get better, ya' hear!

LP ---> WOW!! Great pix! I loved it out there at Ft. Howard until I reviewed some of my pix & saw TONS OF FRIGGIN' spider looking bugs ALL OVER THE CEILING OF THE TUNNELS!!!!! I'm told they're cave crickets or something. Whatever, they look like nasty friggin' spiders to me. ICK!!! Okay, bad memories...back to your pix! Pic #24020 disturbs me. Halloween gear or not, it freaks me out! HAHAHHA!

OH, CONGRATS on being Maryland's Geocacher of the year. That friggin' ROX!!!! My guys and I are soooo interested in caching, but we know of some who were busted and presumed terrorists for a while as they left their cache bag in a train station. Yeah, NOT cute!

Thx 4 sharing your very cool pix! The place looks cool in the fall, and even better w/out spiders in the way!

Thanks everyone for the congrats, and again, the kind words.

Geocaching is THE best way to get to know your own 'backyard' and anyone else's for that matter. You'd be surprised by the things you never knew existed there! Anyway, I could go on and on, but if anyone has real interest in getting started just wave. I have extra GPSr units to share, and am willing to provide a guided tour of any area; what more could you ask for? :) M, I'll make sure that doesn't happen if your 'guys' want to try!

Anyway..more pics a comin'!

Marcy, LP and All...

Hi.

Marcy - Thank you for your kind words about last Summer's visit to 'The Morgue' at Ft. Howard V.A. Hospital. It was neat to get in there. The place was pretty much intact, and that gave it a unique feel (as if people had just walked out of the place and left it). Like a 'ghost town', I reckon.

And, Marce... being in 'Your Book'(the good section, hopefully) is a nice place to be. Thanks! I appreciate all the kindnesses and friendship you've given to me (and to all) on EastGhost. It makes 'The Holidays' all the more cheerful. Muchisimas Gracias, Querida Amiga. Uh, just how many points do I have there now? [wink]

By the way, Marcy, I just saw those fantastic shots you took of Merryman. Absolutely beautiful. I've heard someone has been stealing your pictures!? Yipes! I'm glad you decided to post the ones that you did. Even with the 'watermark', the 'glory of Nature' comes through quite abundantly. Ooops! I should post this on 'that' thread. Sorry LP. I didn't mean to detract from your great shots here.

LP... now I AM jealous. It's one thing to have good pictures; it's another to have LOTS of good pictures. So there. I'm jealous. I hope you are SO happy.[grin]

So... when I go back into 'The Morgue', which one of you will go and be the photographer?

Happy Thanksgiving, All.

Most Humbly,
Terry
